There was a time that the Red Sox vs. Yankees games were must-see events for me. I’ve missed weddings, funerals, job interviews and child birth to watch these games. I faked an illness on the night of my uncle’s induction into the National Yo-Yo Hall of Fame to watch Boomer Wells face the Yankees in 2006. But tonight, I’ll be watching football.

First of all, the 2014 Red Sox suck. Other than the flashes of talent they show (game one of this series being a great example), they are unwatchable. Besides that, does the rivalry even exist any more? You could always count on some kind of dust-up with these teams whether it was player-on-player, player-on-Gerbil or player-on-grounds crew. These days, you’re more likely to see something like that against the Rays.

It seems like the whole thing began to diffuse once King George was no longer in power. How often do you hear anything from Hank or the other guy? Of course, the three championships in ten years probably went a long way to calm people down.

I have to say, I miss the drama. Hopefully there will be some batters getting plunked or Ortiz will admire a home run for five minutes before flipping the bat and jogging around the bases and we’ll be right back to code red. I certainly hope so.
