Shame on the Red Sox marketing folks for missing that one – it will cost them dearly to take ownership of that domain name now. After a little research, it turns out a company named Domains By Proxy actually owns the name. But they’re not out of New York, they are out in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona! Publicity stunt, an attempt to drive the resale cost of the name, or a displaced Yankee fan punking the Sox? Either way, a bit embarrassing. I guess they could have redirected to KFC or Budweiser…

Domains By Proxy isn't the actual owner - they're just a way to keep domain ownership private. As mentioned in the article syphax posted, it's some Cubs fan.
