All Signs Point To A Bad Season For Beckett

Call me the glass-half-empty guy, but I think this season is going to be a disaster for Josh Beckett. And of course I have extensive research and evidence to support my opinion.

1) It’s an even-numbered year. Yes, the most scientific of my data shows Beckett pitches well every other year, those being the odd-numbered years. Check the stats, whether it’s ERA or injury issues, even-numbered years just aren’t his thing.

2) ChickenGate 2011. Beckett just won’t let this go. He won’t take responsibility and he won’t just move on. His latest rant is about “snitches” in the clubhouse…can you say “paranoid?” All he has to do is say he’s coming back focused and in shape and ready to have a great season. Case closed. But he is just too much of a douche to do it.

3) No personal catcher. This is probably the biggest actual concern I have for Beckett. If he’s had it in his head all these years that he needs Tek to be effective, he’s going to have problems.

This is the prefect storm of issues for Beckett to have to deal with, and my gut tells me he isn’t going to get through it successfully. With his attitude, the fans are not going to let him get away with bad outings. Just wait until the boos start, and warm up a place on the DL for him.

Glass half-empty-guy would be too positive.

1) Well if it's a pattern, it's in stone and can't be broken.

2) Media and some fans just won't let this go. Maybe the players know a little more what happened.

3) And Lackey won't be pitching as his Texas buddy leaving him totally ineffective.

Just take him out and stone him to death now before the grand jury indicts him.

Perhaps the media and fans would let it go and move on if Beckett did the same. I don't see anyone hounding Lester - perhaps because he's addressed it, shown some contrition, moved on and come to camp with a positive attitude.

Beckett has not shown the same attitude, in my opinion. He's said as little about it as he thinks he can get away with, has shown no contrition, has clearly not moved on and has instead chosen to make excuses and whine at every given opportunity about the main problem being the "snitches" in the clubhouse, neglecting to mention that if he (and the rest) had not behaved unprofessionally, there would be nothing for the "snitches" to snitch about. I'm actually surprised he hasn't referred to them as "tattle tails" too, and threatened to get his big brother to beat them up.

I wasn't pleased with any of them after this story broke, but I am happy with how Lester has handled the issue since, and have no problem with him. I have a problem with Beckett because I don't think he has handled the aftermath at all well. He's acted like a child instead of a grown man, in my opinion. Lackey, I couldn't care less about either way. We won't see him this year and hopefully they'll trade him ASAP.

I should add before I get accused of hating on the team, if Beckett does come around and take the right attitude to all this, I will no longer have a problem with him. Everyone deserves a second chance.

Except Lackey - fuck him and the horse he rode in on.
