SG Winter Theatre Presents: The Night JD Drew Saved the 2007 ALCS

by Red on January 24, 2011

Few Sox players in recent memory have been as polarizing as JD Drew. Folks seem to either love him and his magical stats, or despise his low-key demeanor. But no one can deny that the highlight of his career in a Boston uniform — to this point, anyway — was that miraculous grand slam that helped seal up game six of the 2007 ALCS and even the series at 3-3.

From the minute the ball left Drew’s bat, we never looked back, outscoring the Injuns 19-4 over the final 17 innings of that series, bouncing back from three straight losses in games two through four.

As a Drew fan, I dug every second of his jaunt around the bases–an image that no doubt haunts Fausto Carmona to this day.

Guess Denton doesn't remember the '08 ALDS where Drew crushed K-Rod in the 9th to break the tie with a 2-run blast.  Or that same postseason when Drew hit a 2-run shot to bring the Sox within a run in the magical comeback game against the Rays....and the game-winner an inning later to right over the outfielder's head--I guess these don't count since the Sox didn't win that year?  Deny him all you want, the man has gotten it done in October on several memorable occasions (he also hit a home run in the '09 ALDS game they should have won...).  Sorry, Denton, the hate is old...like JD is in baseball years!

I have to believe some contending NL team will come sniffing around at the trade deadline for Drew.

I always gave Drew a ton of credit for coming out for a curtain call. After all the crap the fans gave him all year, I would have told them to stuff it. But, he gave us what we wanted. Impressive.

And that "one highlight" kick started the Sox to another Championship.

Worth every $14 million.

I recall exactly that night. I was at Lil Woodrow's (where I had been going to watch the games) Dude across the bar from me groaned when JD stepped up to bat...I didnt even know him and YELLED 'BELIEVE!!!!'  He retorted "Its JD" I YELLED "IT CAN HAPPEN BELIEVE!!!"
Well JD shut him up and he didnt quit rooting for JD the rest of the season. :)

The dumping on Drew is really, really old. The guy plays his positional very well. Quietly, but very well. And some people aren't happy with it. Don't get it at all.

The Sox have had their share of gregarious and outlandish outfielders in the last decade. I'm perfectly content with someone who is less of a character but gets it done.

Heard that there is an unconfirmed rumor that the Rays have made an offer to Mark Bellhorn.

I love Bellhorn. I would also like some of what they're smoking at the Trop.

Ah yes, Drew's 14 Million Dollar Home Run.  It's so nice that during his time here he had that one highlight.

Cindy and I had to walk around Fenway from Burtons and not go into the park that night (as Rob and JD went in). Even though I had a box full of Dogfish Head Jin, the pain still lingers. Got home just in time for the slam.

Missed it.  Smack dab in the middle of my sister's wedding.  Heard about it though; everyone was on their phones.  ;)

I watched this game while attending a work meeting in "Lake Las Vegas" (not really Vegas but a compound half an hour away with a weird Disney-esque fakeness about it, go figure).  I've never heard "Sweet Caroline" sung so many times in a fake Irish bar!

That was the one Red Sox playoff game I ever went to.  The Sox had had bases loaded, no outs, and then Manny struck out, and Lowell flied out.  Letting Carmona off the hook there would've been a huge blow.
But then Drew hit it; I was in the bleachers and I couldn't see the ball land, but there was no ambiguity about what had happened. JD F-ing Drew, who knew?
Too bad it had to be Cleveland. They haven't won a thing in pro sports since 1964.

Story about this moment:

Some friends and I were watching this game together. None of us were big Drew fans (thought he was overpaid and over-rated). As Drew steps up to the plate, one of us (TF) says: "Betcha Drew hits a Grand Slam right here."  Another of us (TC) says: "Not gonna happen. If he does, I'm buying his jersey and wearing it the rest of the play-offs."

After the Grand Slam, I've never seen anyone happier to shell out $125 for a jersey he didn't want! He wore that one with pride through the World Series. Good times.
