July Is Dressed Up And Playing Her Tune

by Denton on July 1, 2010

Last night really shouldn’t be a surprise. The human saliva factory held our minor league bats in check while Dice-K bobbed and weaved out of trouble all night. Manny Delcarmen stepped in and continued his Ramiro Mendoza impersonation, giving up five runs in, well, zero innings. And that’s all she wrote.

One of the highlights of the night was a Heidi Watney game break. Sadly, it wasn’t because she wore a Saran Wrap tube-top. But I digress. The report showed Dustin Pedroia, he of the broken foot, taking ground balls before the game on his knees to keep his hands quick. She went on to quote Tito:

”He’s a maniac. He knows he can’t put any weight on that foot and he knows he’s going to slow himself down if he does. He’ll abide by the rules but he’s going to bend them as much as he can.”

That’s the kind of guy I want on my team. And I have to wonder how JD Drew feels seeing that, as he sits out with a stiff neck. But the story got me thinking about all of the Red Sox players on the DL, and a name from the hazy past came to mind: Jed Lowrie. Last I heard, the guy had the sniffles. Now, here we are at almost the halfway point in the season, and his name is further in the past than “Jacoby Ellsbury.” On May 9th, NESN reported the following:

According to NESN.com’s Red Sox reporter Tony Lee, infielder Jed Lowrie has gained four pounds and is combining baseball-related activities with strength and conditioning this week for the first time since he came down with mono in March. Manager Terry Francona said he could be playing games again in about four weeks.

My math skills aren’t the best, but four weeks from May 9th…well, it was a while ago. Now, we suffer through the post-loss off-day before heading into the Fourth of July weekend. Despite all the injuries, the Sox were 18-9 in June and are just a game out of first. Where would a healthy Red Sox team be? Perhaps July will show us.

Sorry, I just can't get behind dissin' one of our players if they're hurt or ill.  You can never know how serious it is and we all have different threshholds.

i had mono. it sucked. although it was better than t.b. or cancer, which is what the doctor said it might be before he gave me the mono test. way to scare a 14 year old girl, doc.

There can be no doubt that he really did have mono.  When he was pulled from the spring training game on Mar 11, he spent almost 5 hours in an emergency room running tests and has been trying to fight back from mono ever since.  He has been more frustrated than anybody about this.  I hope, for his sake, that he is now ready to go.  Word of his "bad day" a week ago has me a little concerned that he occasionally still has a day where he is totally wiped out, which would mean he is not fully recovered, and if so, conctact could be dangerous for him.  Putting him back in action before his spleen returns to normal size could seriously jepardize his health long term.

Considering where the team was a month ago . . . no offense . . . pitching shitty save for the front two . . . DEVIL Ray running away with the division . . . all in all not bad.

If the guy really has mono I'd say a degree of slack should be cut for him...I've never had it myself (thank Pod), but I know some who have and it really does shitcan you for an extended period of time.  It's difficult to get across what a bad scene it is...it's like trying to explain how severe a migraine headache is to someone who's never had anything worse than a hangover.

All things considered, I'd still rather be Boston than the Rays.

Would have been nice to be tied for 1st place today, but I'll take where the team is right now.

Baseball off days DO suck, but the team REALLY needs the rest and recovery time!

I rekon that Lowrie just started an assignment in A-ball.

P.S. I rather forgot Jed was on the team :-[

P.P.S. Munchkin was on a version of his "Laser Show" on WEEI which is worth the listen particularly when he discusses the origin of the term. Anyways, he goes to the field at the same time, does rehab, lifts weights, then asked to take grounders.  Is that a team mate and a lesson to others?  Damn straight!

P.P.P.S. And fuck Giambi.
